Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Wednesday afternoon we took out “My Bonnie” regulars, Murray Verlin and Coleen McCourtney, of Stamford and New York City. The weather left much to be desired, but the couple had a great day—catching 13 striped bass and we stopped counting the porgies after 35. They kept a few for their dinner that evening.
Friday’s trip was with Harry Pietz of Oakmont, Pennsylvania, and his brother, Wes, who resides in New York City. The winds were fairly high—15-25 out of the northwest—and we worked the shorelines and moved westerly toward Darien, where we fished one of the coves, where some nice blues up to 8 pounds hit our top-water poppers. We then made our way towards Westport and had fun with stripers and another blue weighing close to 10 pounds.
On Saturday morning we sailed with Jay Davenport of Rowayton and three of his Wall Street colleagues. We found schoolie bass around the Norwalk Islands, and then at 11B the boys jigged up bluefish up to 9 pounds. During the trip there were often triple headers and non-stop action. They kept just one of the larger bluefish for dinner.
Later in the day Dr. Steve Eliot of Weston and his son, Andrew—a New York City attorney—and Andrew’s friend, Eric, had a fantastic afternoon bringing in many striped bass, including three keepers that measured 33”, 35” and 37” and bluefish up to 9 lbs. All of the fish were released except for the 33-inch striper.
We had a double-header on Monday, starting with Dan Bernstein of Westport—and his mom, dad, and two daughters. The family had a great morning, tallying more than a dozen bass, including one keeper—and loads of porgies. In the afternoon we had another Westport party; the twosome caught 14 striped bass, two bluefish and some porgies. All the fish were released
Tuesday’s trip was with George Moreo of Westport and his friend, Frank. They caught 16 stripers up to 26”, some blues, and another mess of porgies—all of which went right back into the Sound.
