Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
The sailfish are here! Every September, the mullet run begins, which is a huge migration of literally millions of mullet down our coastline. They reinvigorate the shallow waters and the reefs with plenty of available food and bring with them a slew of big game predator fish that follow. Sailfish are one of these big game fish are they are the most sought after gamefish in the entire world. No other species of fish has had so many anglers spend so much time, energy, money and effort to catch than sailfish. They truly are the most awesome gamefish in the planet and best of all, we catch them only 1 mile off the Ft Lauderdale coast.
With deepwater fishing grounds so close to shore, Ft Lauderdale is one of the best and most convenient inlets to fish for sailfish. You can potentially catch a sailfish within 15 minutes of leaving the dock. September through February is sailfish season in Ft Lauderdale and so far, September has been exceptional. We've already had some awesome catches of sailfish this week.
There are 2 main ways to target sailfish. You can go trolling or kite fishing. If there is a strong steady wind, I recommend going kite fishing for them. With a steady wing, you can fly 2 kites and position 4 frisky live baits dangling below them. A passing sailfish just can't pass that up. If there is not enough wind, you can still go live baiting, but without kites you will need to slowly drag the live baits behind the boat from the outriggers. This is a good method in and of itself as you can cover a lot more territory out there than by kite fishing. However, the presentation of the live baits using kites is the most successful technique, provided there is enough wind.
Trolling is the other technique to catch sailfish in Ft Lauderdale. Trolling is a method of dragging artificial lures and rigged baits at a pretty good speed to simulate a school of escaping baitfish prey. The great thing about trolling is that you can cover a lot of territory out there over a shorter time. Trolling allows you to rig baits that can be pulled at great speeds than live baits also, which sometimes yields a more aggressive bite. Ans best of all, trolling works well for not just sailfish, but also for bonito, kingfish, wahoo, tuna and mahi-mahi. You never know what you might catch when trolling.
September is a transition month in Ft Lauderdale, but with the mullet running down our coast and less boats out there fishing, there are plenty of big game fish out there for the taking. Good luck to everyone fishing this month. Tight Lines and Good Fishing!
