Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
April 2, 2006
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

SW FLorida has all the usual suspects in town except Silver Kings. The Big Boys were here 10 days ago when the water tempts hit 78 but pulled a "Hank Snow" when the cold front dropped tempts to 65. We are now at 72.

The following is the Truth, the whole truth, S.H.M.G.!

Tripletail fishing is on fire. Your wallet will be on fire as well to run for them. At Jensen's Marina in Captiva, the Arabs had me paying $3.35 cents per gallon for 89 octane. Think of all the curse words you know and this was my reaction as I disappeared into the sunset. 3-Tail trips with me are now + 100.00 extra. Yes, they are good but jeeze-louise! In front of Sanibel is all the 3tails in the world. We found some discarded cardboard boxs. Under each box were "nests" of 3 tails. If you can afford to run for them, the 3tails are as guaranteed as The Mustang Ranch and will cost ya about the same.

Trout: Some of the biggest Trout in years are roaming around PIS. (Pine Island Sound) Most are north of Chino Island. The monsters are up in the Useppa area.

4-5LBS.

Redfish: I have been seeing large schools of nomadic Redfish in the Gulf of Mexico off Redfish Pass. PLEASE do not take these boys on with light spinning gear. I wore one out on a Catalyst Model 20 (Quantum) with 15LB Power Pro. It was simply no fear to exhaust him like I did. It took over 30 minutes and 1/2 mile to revive him. If you must challenge these bruts, do so and "get her done." I think they are out there mating and maybe they are tired from that. (Can't understand that) How can you get tired mating?

Tarpon were here and split. My best day Tarpon fishing (ever) was April 21, 2004. Water temps are coming back up and the 'poons' will follow. I've seen lots of sharks looking for the displaced tarpon.

Redfish? Hmmmmm. They are in the bushes. If you can make pinpoint casts, you will catch them. If you cannot, you screwed. Scented stuff like Gulp Shrimp works. "GiddyUp"
