A Red Hot Day in Homosassa with Capt. Matt Locklear

Capt. Mike Locklear
October 31, 2018
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt Matt Locklear of Homosassa Backcountry Fishing Charters invited me to go fishing off the Hernando County coast, The area was hard bottom with a few grass patches. We stayed there in about 3-5 feet of water. We have been out quite a bit over this past season tarpon fishing with the fly rod tarpon and spin rods under live bait and MirrOlures.

Matt was catching some spotted seatrout and was getting his buds and clients limits most days, using MirrOdines and the oval shaped Cajun Thunder Cork rig, the latter out producing any type hard bait.

Most every fisherman(woman) loves to share their adventures. My best trip this October was when Matt invited me out for a half day trip of trout fishing. This was sure to be a trip that proved to be the fastest action in quite a while. I'll cut to the chase, we both landed around 10 each in less than an hour. We were drifting and idled around on the same track twice and limited out.

Matt sweetened the pot when we both agreed to try redfishing on a mangrove laden key well known but some 40 yards few yards away from where most anglers fish. The tide was nearly high. Matt chose and shrimp under a stout Gamakatsu 2/0 offset hook. He banged a 23-incher. I chose the same rig except no cork.

I remember fishing with the my Dad(the great Eustace"Skip" Locklear.) Dad didn't use corks. However, the MirrOlure 7M808 was his absolute go to lure for both trout and reds. After landing a 25-inch red, we decided to head in since it was a late afternoon trip. Pretty dang good for 3 hours from dock to dock.

Homosassa Fishing Forecast:

Look for very good to excellent action with Grouper and Trout. With cooler water temps if you can go before an approaching cold front action will be much better than a day or two after a cold front. The day before with a southwest wind is the best.

Target Species:

Grouper Trout Redfish Snook Mackerel Bluefish Flounder Pompano
