Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear

Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

IFA Redfish Tour Report- Hammered in Titusville

The cold front that swept through the first week of March had lasting effects from cooler water temps to high winds that hampered my abilities to catch fish or even go out fishing. Some days are meant to be in the office, others are to catch fish.

However, when your office is the boat, sometimes work has to be done. Fishing tournaments are new to me and so far I have not had much good luck with the Inshore Fishing Association's Pro Redfish Tour. What is so frustrating is being in a school of redfish, but they just would not eat.

The lures only event makes it challenging to say the least. And what makes it even tougher, you must have a fish(s) that is within the slot to weigh-in. Some anglers in the field had fish that were too big to qualify. 79 teams did not weigh in a redfish. Just too much like winter conditions and the fish in Mosquito Lagoon were lethargic.

Anglers who did well traveled well out of the Titusville area south towards Melbourne, for tidal conditions and possibly warmer water temps. As Grady Warren stated in his newsletter, “with this kind of talent the cream will rise to the top.”

Truly the ones who came in on top are great anglers. The majority of the top place finishers were from out of town, so you just never know who is going to win with all the pros involved.

Artie Price and Arthur Price Sr. won $14,000 with the largest stringer of redfish with twin 8.62 pound redfish. My friend, Capt. Greg Devalt from the Port Richey area and John Turner were only .19 of a pound under the winners for the second place finish.

The winners’ list goes on with 37 teams scoring points for Team Anglers of the year and can be viewed at www.redfishtour.com

In Homosassa, the redfish are biting and several nice ones were caught just yesterday by my clients. Some were too big to keep and some were just under the 27 inch mark. Also, schools of spotted seatrout have showed up in the shallow waters of the Bay. Catch 2000 Mirrolures are working for the trout and Cotee Gold Spoons for the redfish
