Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
May 9, 2001
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Some of you who follow my reports know that there has been a lack of said reports.

Again, I apologize, but writing has been a low priority recently. If you are a guide you

understand that pecking on the keyboard is the last thing you want to do after a long day

on the water. However, I feel the necessity to promote Homosassa fishing and my goals

are to get back on at least a weekly reporting status. This is not a promise, as I said,

during the season which is April through July reports may be sparse.

Two weeks of high northeast winds between 15-25 mph have plagued the tarpon grounds

and caused fruitless experiences for my anglers. Fly fishing for tarpon has to be the

hardest sport any angler could pursue. With little or no rewards, my emotions are

crushed. There is hope on the horizon as the weather is suppose to improve by Thursday.

The water temperature hovered between 69-72 degrees the first 6 days of May. This is a

big turn-off for the monster poons to chew. Birthday boy Ben Bumgardner who last year

got his first tarpon on the first cast and was dubbed the luckiest white man from North

Carolina. Last week he had one tarpon out of a pod of 30 nose the fly only not to eat.

That is what we call a looker. I did not even get a rush, I hope Ben did.

For the next three days I have the big guns a comin’. That means if I find the fish, the

client will be able to deliver the goods. Wish me good luck!
