Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
January 26, 2002
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Warmer weather has brought up our water temperature to 70 degrees on the Homosassa flats. Redfish are beginning to eat with tides slightly better than weeks before. Pompano are starting to bite early this year. Trout have been very plentiful. Anglers wishing to take home a few should book this week before trout season closes. February 1 begins a one month closure for possession of spotted sea trout in our area which includes all of the northwest coast of Florida north of the Anclote River.

Randy Hodges is hosting the 3rd Annual Trout Masters' Fishing Tournament. The tournament will be held on March 2 & 3, 2002 at Pete's Pier in Crystal River, Florida. The captains meeting will also be at Pete's Pier, starting 6:00 PM on March 1, 2002. A $50.00 entry fee is required. One person per boat (must fish alone). 5 fish weigh-in each day. Prize money will be determined at the captain's meeting, based on the number of entries. 100 % pay back to the participants. For more information contact Randy Hodges at 352-795-9161.

A good way to enjoy some great fun is to join the Citrus County Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association in celebrating and protecting the unique Nature Coast environment at their 15th annual fund-raising banquet on Thursday, March 7th. The evening at Rock Crusher Canyon begins at 6:00 with an open bar, music, and the silent auction of fishing and hunting art, the finest in outdoor equipment, and sporting memorabilia. The exceptional buffet dinner is followed by a live auction and the opportunity to bid on fabulous hunting and fishing trips, boats, jewelry, unique artwork, and an extensive section of clothing and equipment. Only the first 300 requests for tickets can be honored so please plan early. Tickets for the event are $65 per person and include the 6:00 - 7:00 open bar and buffet in addition to a year's membership in CCA. For tickets or more information contact Mike Friddle at 352-726-2553, Jeff Kinnard at 352-527-5433, Ben Branch at 352-795-8119 or myself at 352-628-4207. This will sell out so please commit early.
