Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
November 12, 2002
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Homosassa Florida for redfish and trout is what I get paid to do. However, with the cold fronts moving through redfish can be tough to get after the fronts move through. Trout slow down as well after the front moves through.

However, just before a front the fish tear it up like eating is going out of style. What I really like to catch this time of year is gag grouper on the shallow water rocks. It is awesome catching a 10 pound grouper on light tackle. I know the grouper are starting to eat and its time to get after them.

On Sunday November 3, I met up with Duane Anglin and family from Augusta, Georgia. Duane brought with him his wife, Karen and his daughter, Stacey and son-in-law, Keith. Plans were to go catch some fish and return for a shore dinner after a full day of fishing.

The group stayed at Billy Sasser’s condo on the Homosassa River and that would serve as the landing for our trip that day. When I showed up at the dock, the group who were all wearing Georgia Bulldog attire. They were brave to wear that in Gator country particularly when they got beat by a score of 20-13. Folks at MacRae’s ask them who won. Duane talked back to the stranger saying he was going to catch a Gator since he could not eat any last night.

Karen started off breaking the ice with a nice keeper trout. After a few hours, everyone reeled in a keeper trout and we kept five for dinner before we decided to go for redfish. We had the remnants of the cold front from Saturday and the northeast wind made it tough to catch a lot of fish quick. So we had to work for what we caught. Probably 50 cast for each fish caught.

Later the wind changed to the west and the tide rose. This made the redfish hungry. Stacey showed off by landing the first redfish. Keith followed with two keeper size reds. Karen managed to land one with a lot of carrying on about wanting some help, but did not get any. We encouraged her that she could do it, hang in there. Duane finally got in on the action later and caught both a redfish and a Black Drum. It was fun for all.

Since we had some fish to cook we came on in around 4:00 to get ready for the shore lunch.

The shore dinner turned out real good according to the group. My wife, Sherry helped me with packing all the supplies and made some homemade potato salad. I fixed up some of my world famous hushpuppies, so they say. They came out close to perfect and were beyond great taste with Mema’s homemade guava jelly. A little piece of fried bacon on top of a hushpuppy smeared with a glob of jelly blends just right going down the old hatch. Mmm Mmm Hmm makes my mouth water thinking about it.

Well, folks I got a lot more to write about, but it will have to wait cause I am taking my son to Georgia for some deer hunting! When I get back, let’s do some fishing!

Capt. Mike
