Clarkson Beats Homosassa Tarpon On Fly Rod

As you know there is a time for everything. Fly fishing for tarpon on the Homosassa flats has been the best these past few weeks and continues to be that way possibly until mid-July since the daisy chain schools showed up in greater numbers lately.

Cole Clarkson of Texas organized his motley crew of 12 college buddies including two brothers and his Dad. It was a phenomenal weekend. Sporting his grandmother’s motley shirt, the first day of his arrival he was fishing with his brother Tee aboard a tiny skiff in my shadows. Not really.

Anyway, the tarpon were cruising through and the glare was bad to the east and Tee was set up just west of me. A pod of six tarpon got by me and I hollered over to Cole that the fish were headed there way. At my instruction Cole made a cast just in front of the school.

The fish ate and instantly jumped then headed south and I suppose the boat was anchored, so Tee could not spin it around quick enough. So the tarpon broke the tip of the rod on the poling platform as Cole was dancing towards the stern of the boat.

A minute later the 100 pound plus giant managed to pull the rod apart at the ferrell. Later on in the battle they recovered the section and reinstalled the broke section to the butt of the rod.

The fish was suicidal and was abruptly landed inside of 30 minutes.

There is so much more to write about, but I must go and fish now.
