Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
October 3, 2005
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

September Ends With Good Redfish Numbers

For Homosassa, Florida flats fishing, nice redfish catches of up to 15 per angler were enjoyed during the last week of September. Sizes were mostly between 20 to 28 inches. Most of the reds were taken on live shrimp or filleted pinfish. Most all of the redfish were caught on the incoming tides around the mangroves and points along the entire scope of the Nature Coast.

On September 23, John Michael and Taylor came aboard my Mercury outfitted Hells Bay from the Atlanta Fishing Club dock on a breezy morning. The two were guest of Inman Allen of Ivan Allen Workspace of Atlanta, Georgia. After introductions we arrived at our first and most productive redfish spot. Both John and Taylor were hooked up on the first cast of the morning. Several double hook-ups were enjoyed with more than a dozen redfish caught and released. More than 20 guest enjoyed similar catches with the top Homosassa fishing guides.

Then on last Monday the 26th, more than 30 redfish were caught and released during the course of the day by two agents of Cotton States Insurance Company. Phil Wood of Woodstock, Ga. and Mike Barnett of Dothan, Al. reeled in red after red. It was a fine morning of fun. Later we got into the trout, but most were undersized. We kept three trout for dinner and three redfish.

On Tuesday, at 0700 hours Phil brought with his fishing buddy Bo Whitley of Roswell, Ga. Again we smoked the redfish spending almost all day catching them before Bo suggested we try trout. A few trout were caught as we kept three trout and three reds for their plane ride home. About 40 agents enjoyed similar catches with the best of Homosassa’s guides.

AFC member and Sun Trust Mogul, Jack Glass and guest Richard Hixson enjoyed an awesome day of redfishing with me this past Thursday. We estimated 30 redfish that were caught and released in a span of about 90 minutes. We later enjoyed a shore lunch and called it a day. Bring it on Jerome! Thank You, Sir!

October 1 began as September ended with an awesome catch of redfish. Also some nice trout up to 20 inches are starting to show up and are hitting top water Mirrolures. Matthew Boren of Orlando treated his Dad to a trip and the two landed more than 20 redfish. It was a fun day for both father and son. The wind and some scattered rain kept us cool.

New Moon incoming tides are the best all this week for both trout and redfish. By this weekend the early mornings will be best for redfishing and then trout later on throughout the day. Best lures for trout are Mirrolure 5M808 floater or Popa Dog Mirrolure in red and white. Also Cajun Thunders over Bass Assassin 5-inch Eels or 3-inch Sea Shad in Electric Chicken. Fish the kelp grass beds in 3 to 5 feet of water for trout. Redfish will be concentrated around the points and creek mouths along the shorelines.

I want to thank all of you, Jesus Christ, my family, friends, clients and sponsors for supporting me throughout the last twenty years. I will be 50 on the 15th. Pray for me.
