Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
April 23, 2006
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Catch 47 is Tampa Bay's #1 Fishing Televison

Glen Pla of Catch 47 is not just your average angler as his TV show implies. With a degree in theater and drama, his stardom dreams moving to California faded away. Pla, native to Tallahassee moved to Tampa Bay and became a personality in the fishing community by creating Average Angler Adventures.

The popular one hour program is informative but humorous. His degree in theater gives the show a quirky type of atmosphere that candidates it for Saturday morning cartoons.

However, because everyone is out fishing on Saturday, the show airs four times a week starting at 7:00 P.M. on Monday, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00 A.M. and on Wednesdays at 7:00 P.M.

Every two weeks Pla tries to produce enough raw footage for a new show and the better fishing trips become classics. Because of the editing, special effects and slow fishing due to camera shy fish, a show could take several trips to make an hour long show.

Perhaps for this reason, the studio created 47 Fish Finder for the viewers an up to date weekly fishing report of fishing guides and experts that covers the Tampa Bay area including Ozello and Homosassa. Bi-weekly, Capt. Glen Touchton reports for Ozello while I speak for Homosassa occasionly. The show airs on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 P.M. and on weekends at 11:00 A.M.

Fishing Reports on 47 Fish Finder are valuable for our local anglers especially in the spring when the king and Spanish mackerel are making their way north.

When I asked Pla about anyone interested in having a fishing show. His response was to “be ready for hard work. To be prepared for rejection but also to persevere. To have good production people who have to be paid. Most importantly a solid sponsorship should be acquired before the cameras roll. Also to make something positive of the slow days and keep working hard long hours.”

Homosassa Fishing Report

Both kings and Spanish mackerel fishing has been on fire for the past two weeks and more are headed are way. Look for the kings in 30-35 feet of water. Lipped lures like Mirrolure 111 or Mann’s Stretch 25+ work well. Use #4 Malin hard wire for leader.

Trout have been tearing it up out in 8 feet of water near the foul area in the old Bombing Range. Use Bass Assassin Electric Chicken 4” Sea Shads or Cotee Twin Tail shrimp in pearl. Some trout have been undersized to 15 inches minimum to an occasional 20 plus incher.

Redfish are along the coastal shorelines on the incoming tide. Use live shrimp or Johnson ¼ or ½ oz. gold spoons. Sizes have been averaging 18-24 inches with some up to 30 inches.

Cobias have made their appearance on the flats and on the rays. Use black eels for bait. Sizes reported have been from 10-30 pounds

Hooked On Fishing with Capt. Bill Miller

The pressure will be on this week as I guide a client with Capt. Miller of Catch 47 TV of Tampa Bay's #1 fishing televison station. Tune in this Thursday night live to see what we caught.

Tarpon On My Mind

Always on my mind, as the time draws closer for a close encounter of the silvery king of fishes.

No time to relax.

Let the games begin.

Lets be nice to one another.
