Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report
A good friend of mine John Guinta talked me into leaving the boat at home and going with him to one of his secret spots in his canoe. I haven’t been in a canoe in years. We pulled off the side of the road and put the canoe in what was nothing more than a ditch. After a short paddle of about 200 yards winding around a few turns it was like being in another world.
Big Redfish were pushing wakes everywhere. As he rowed I couldn’t help but to make some cast’s at the Redfish but they did not want any thing to do with us. I did hook two small ones. The tide was on the last half of out going which is my favorite tide pretty much all year but the Winter time for sure.
The mud flat’s seem to heat up a little when it is a sunny day. We pulled the canoe up on a sand bar and got out and went on to catching at least 20 nice Trout in less than an hour. We kept enough for a nice dinner and were back home by 8:30 am.
Man what a great time. We went thru some plastics, but free lining live shrimp worked the best. Using light spinning tackle with about 3 feet of fluorocarbon leader and a uni-knot with a split shot weight on the line just above the leader and a number 6 Kahle hook. Casting up tide and letting the shrimp glide with the current. Almost every cast was a fish.
We also caught four big bluefish in the 4 pound range. They are quite a fight on the light tackle.
Till next time, tight lines,
