Snapper, Sheepshead, and some Largemouth

Capt. Ted Gibson
January 29, 2017
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Had a couple of offshore trips the last couple days. The water has been dirty with visibility 12 miles offshore only at about a foot. We have been fishing over natural reefs in about 45' of water. The snapper have been biting well with the cloudy water and both trips provided enough fish for dinner. As far as size goes we have been catching Mangrove and lane snapper to 16". We haven't landed anything huge, but we did have a strike on a live Spanish Mackerel that we had under a balloon (more likely than not a kingfish, but he missed the last treble on our wire rig). Our Inshore boat has been doing well with the Sheepshead that don't seem to mind the cold water and yesterday we brought back 17 of them fishing around the docks in the passes. We have been using Sand Fleas and Shrimp for those. The last few evenings I have been driving down to the end of Bonita Beach Road and Fishing some of the ponds and canals in the CREW Wildlife Management are. I have been catching largemouth to 17" on Frogs and Senko worms rigged Texas Style. Lots of fun on light tackle…watch out for panthers if you go; I saw my first one ever last night at about 20 yards…it was an awesome experience!
