Navarre - Saltwater Fishing Report

If you're not out there fishing or at least trying to make plans to get out there, then you sure are missing out on some of the best fishing that the early summer has to offer!!
After fishing most every day in April, I can tell you for sure, the BIG female Speckled Trout are on the move. I've been relying on old faithful (Santa Rosa Sound) to deal her hand at paying the bills for the month of April. The inshore fishing is off the hook; let me run down a few of the species of fish that I've caught in the sound and Pensacola Bay; lots of Speckled Trout (over 100 in the last week with eight over five pounds), lots of slot sized Red Fish (not 100 but probably close), Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, Red Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Gag Grouper, Sharks, Jack Crevalle, Sheepshead and Ladyfish (AKA, Skipjack) I'm sure there are more that I've forgotten about, but I think that's the most of them.
Man what a mixed bag of fish, and they are all fun to catch on light tackle. I get the biggest thrill out of taking first timers saltwater fishing, the excitement of a youngster with his first red fish on is why I love doing what I do. The Speckled Trout are hitting artificial baits good at first light. Red Fish were caught on live shrimp. So what does that tell you, GET SOME LIVE SHRIMP! The shrimp hatch is strong right now and that's their main diet, so feed them what they are eating and you'll be much more successful.
May‘s best bets is going to the Gulf. The bait is plentiful around Pensacola Pass, and the King Mackerel are here. Use live baits for the King's (fresh lively Cigar minnow's); use flashy spoons for the Spanish mackerel. The big fish are going to be Amberjack, and Crevalle Jack. Hit the near – shore reefs with some big live baits and catch some Amberjack then head back in and cruise the beach looking for schools of Crevalle Jacks. I only use big top water chugging plugs like SPRO's Popper 50 for the Crevalle Jacks. Talking about a top water explosion – WOW!!! Remember to keep a close eye out around the boat for Cobia while you're in the Gulf. I always keep a rod rigged and ready for the flathead's.
I still have a few days left in May but I have no days left in June. I'm looking forward to a great summer of fishing and getting to see my guest having a fishing experience that last a life time!
A man never stands as tall as when he helps teach a child how to fish……… thank you Dad!
