Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was steady this week, with docks and bars in Robert's Bay providing some variety and action action. Black drum to 20", speckled trout to 22", snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, flounder, and jacks hit live shrimp and pilchards. The deep grass flats at Stephen's Pt., Bird Key, and the Radio Tower yielded bluefish, mackerel, trout, ladyfish, jacks, and more for anglers casting Bass Assassin jigs and free lining live shrimp.

On Monday David Meunier from Nebraska fished with me. We started off at Stephen's Pt, having decent success casting Bass Assassin New Penny jigs. Bluefish, mackerel, trout, and ladyfish kept him pretty busy for an hour and a half. The bite slowed and we moved around a bit, catching a few more fish before heading in.
On Tuesday Sarasota residents Bill Kish, John Englander, and Chip Butler went out for a six hour charter. Once again, I started off at Stephen's Pt, but with less success, catching small trout, ladyfish, jacks, and sea bass on jigs and shrimp. A move to Marina jacks resulted in a bit of action with ladyfish and trout. I ran to Robert's Bay, caught some threadies, and we finished up with good action on docks, catching snook, nice mangrove snapper, and Chip topped the trip off with a gorgeous, fat 22" speckled trout.

Stephanie and Mike Kusibab from Chicago and their 13 year old son Jason had a good charter on Wednesday. We had to leave mid-morning due to some travel issues, but it worked out well. We hit some docks and caught black drum to 20", snapper, and flounder in Robert's Bay using live shrimp. My buddy and fellow CB's guide Roy String called me and told me where there was a bunch of bait, so I netted up a well full and hit a spot and started chumming. It was basically "Fish on!" for the next 45 minutes as the chum drew the fish in. Most of the fish were jack crevelle but a few small snook and snapper were mixed in as well. I returned the favor by calling Roy and telling him where I was and he came in and finished up his charter with a nice flurry. The guides at CB's are all pretty easy going and we often work together and share information to ensure that every client has a good time!

I had a charter scheduled on Thanksgiving, but it was quite breezy so we moved it to another day. Suzy Wahba and her son Charlie from NYC went out on Friday morning, action was steady, though unspectacular, as they caught ladyfish and trout on the drop-offs near Bird Key and snapper and several snook under docks in Robert's Bay. All of the fish hit live shrimp.
I finished up my week on Saturday with a fun charter with the Calkins from Brookfield, WI Barb and Casey and their two sons Corey and Chris experienced steady action near Big Pass, catching a lot of fish, mostly decent sized ladyfish. Both Bass Assassin jigs and free lined shrimp were effective. After a good flurry where we had doubles and triples, I caught bait and we hit an oyster bar on the way in. Several snook, snapper, and a redfish were landed to wind up an enjoyable trip with a very nice family!
