Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report
The wind died down early this week, but the after effects of the last cold front have not subsided. Fishing guides working Southshore Tampa Bay reported that the action was generally slow.
The good news is that there is bait in the bay, and more coming every day. Water temperature continues to climb, and as soon as it hits 70, we should start seeing some snook on the flats.
Captain Chet Jennings said he’s been fishing the backcountry of Cockroach Bay and catching mostly short snook on live sardines. Capt. Danny Guarino filed a similar report from the Little Manatee River.
Keli Emery told me she caught some keeper-sized snapper in the Little Manatee River on small sardines, along with a couple of short snook. She was fishing the deep bends of the river.
I fished the flats south of Apollo Beach on Thursday, and found only one pod of redfish. On Friday I did some scouting, starting on the flats in front of Joe Island, and working my way back all the way to Sand Key. Despite clear water, bright sunshine and light winds, I did not see much of anything on the flats between the Skyway and the mouth of the Little Manatee River.
Gabe Krakowski had a better day on flats north of the Little Manatee River. He caught three jacks and an oversized redfish on RipTide Mullet. I have seen several big schools of jacks around Mangrove Point, and also around the mouth of the river. It’s good to see the jacks back, but gone are the thousand of bonnethead sharks I was seeing only a week ago. I saw not a single shark on Friday.
