Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report
Good weather again this week, though it got windy Thanksgiving night. There was a big school of 12 to 15 pound jacks terrorizing baitfish in the Little Manatee River earlier this week, but they have since disappeared. Probably has something to do with water temperature, which was back up to 69 degrees. The next cold snap should put them back in the river.
Capt. Marc Noe reports good catch and release action on trout. He’s been fishing the deeper grass flats off Pinellas Point, Cockroach Bay and Joe Island. He said there were some ladyfish, bluefish and Spanish mackerel in the mix. Soft plastic baits were most effective on the trout, fished on ¼ and 1/8 ounce jig heads.
Capt. Chet Jennings and I waded the flats on the blustery Friday morning after Thanksgiving trying to hook a redfish with our flyrods. There were plenty of fish on the flats south of Sand Key, and plenty of other fishermen as well, despite the windy conditions. I threw at lots of tails and made several casts good enough to catch fish, but nothing ate my fly. It was still fun to see all those tails in the air. Good wade fishing tides will continue in the morning hours through Wednesday.
The follwing day I headed north to the flats south of Apollo Beach and caught two reds throwing a RipTide jig head and their four inch Curtailer.
Capt. Larry Malinoski had a good day trolling for grouper in the bay earlier this week. He caught several grouper in the 10 pound class, and also released a big goliath grouper.
There is plenty of bait on the flats now, but much of it is small. Bigger baits are hanging on the range markers in the middle of the bay, with some small baits mixed in.
