Crappie fishing is heating up!

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

January 6, 2009

Water Temp is 52

We are entering the time of year when the crappie fishing just gets crazy good! It starts as the weather cools down in January, then comes February with sometimes really cold temps that makes the crappie go crazy. Finally in March it is "katy bar the door", as the biggest fish of the year are caught.

The season is getting a very good start as some really big fish are being caught already. I helped a friend filet 24 fish just yesterday that the total weight was over 40 pounds. WOW! There were several fish in this group that were over 2 1/5 pounds. They were delicious.

The fish are taking black and blue Jiffy Jigs, tipped with minnows and fished down 8 to 10 feet. We are concentrating most of our efforts around the North End, but there are some reports coming from Sugar and Lick Creek. It seems that the morning bite is much better than the afternoon as the warm weather has made GAPWR move very little water.

The stripers are at the south end of the lake and the are working under the birds, or I should say the birds are working over the stripers. If you see the birds diving make sure you get a live bait in the water and slowly move closer to them. Also throw crankbaits, soft plastics or anything that a striper would find appetizing.

Lake Oconee is starting to come alive as the cold weather sets in. You should come out and give it a try!

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
