Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Stripers

November 4, 2002

IT IS JUST ABOUT HERE! This has to be my most favorite time of the fishing season as we start chasing those huge stripers in Lanier and Hybrids at Oconee.

The weather is getting cooler and the bait is starting to stack up in the mouths of the feeder creeks, which only means one thing, the fish are soon to follow. My buddy, Shane Watson, happened to be at the right place at the right time and caught 34 stripers at Lanier yesterday. Now for you that don’t know how big that is, well let’s just say that doesn’t happen often and he definitely had help from above! He is a great fisherman, by all means, but catches like that are only found in the Bible. The fish are stacking up in the main lake channels and this particular school was very close to Van’s Tavern. Shoal Creek, Flat Creek, and Mud Creek and about everywhere else on the south side is starting to produce stripers. The schooling activity has started and if you look for the gulls and ride and watch the water, you will see a lot of surface activity. On Oconee the Hybrids are moving into the river bend area and we are just starting to see lots of bait show up. The channel at Sugar Creek is holding fish right now and if you want to catch them you need to use live bait. Last night I walked out on my dock and threw my net, (I was bored) and when I retrieved it, I found it loaded up with gizzards and threads.

The bait is coming to the shallows and the fish will follow. I am booking trips right now!

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
