Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 52-56

The tsunami may have occurred on the other side of the world, but I think it is somehow affecting our weather at Lake Oconee for the last few weeks. But there again what do I know. I am just a lowly fishing guide and I don’t understand weather like, lets say, Kirk Mellish

I do know this. The hybrids absolutely love it! The fish have been holed up at Double Branches and it is literally like catching them out of a barrel. I have seen around 8 to 10 boats in the area, all catching hybes, and after this report I will probably be seeing more. We have been boating 10 to 20 nice hybes just about every afternoon. 2 days ago one of my customers landed one that tipped the Boca Grip at just over 8 pounds.

I seriously this something weird is going on with our weather because for the last 2 weeks I have fished in a short sleeve shirt right up until dark. IT IS JANUARY! According to my trusty fishing logs we have not seen warm weather like this since……………well since before I was keeping trusty fishing logs.

We are catching most of our fish on flat-lines with minnows, however by accident I found an artificial lure that is catching huge fish just about every time I throw it. It has no name because I created it, but if you email me, I will tell you how I created it, you can make you one and then you can name it yourself.

The morning bite has been wide open also, with anglers getting off the lake early limiting out on these hard fighters. As I type this report it is raining side ways outside my office and I hear a cold front is on the way. I will let you know if this weather change is going to mess up the great fishing we have been experiencing. Maybe I’ll call Kirk and he can do something about it!

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
