Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water temp 85-90

These are the dog days of summer, but suprisingly we have been catching fish all over the lake. It is important to point out here that if you are using live bait, you must be sure your water is cooler than 70 degrees.

In my bait tank I use the water from my tap, which is well water from my community water system. However it doesn't take long for it to began to heat up during a day of fishing.

If live bait is not your thing, you should try pulling a goober rig in the Sugar Creek area. Everyone knows where the hayfields are, and people are catching alot of hybes off the bottom, using these crazy contraptions. Lake Oconee is the only place in the world where I have seen them used, but the work pretty good here.

You are going to find the fish in just about the same spots as the last report. Look at Flagpole, SC, Lick Creek, and River Bend. At River Bend and Bull Hole the smaller white bass have been schooling almost every day. Throw a popping cork or a white rooster tail and you can catch a fish a cast.

From this month it will only begin to get better. As soon as cooler temps prevail we will be on for some great hybrid fish. BTY, I met Scott Robinson (DNR Biologist) a few weeks ago as they were putting the last of 192,000 striper fingerlings in our lake. In a year and a half he said we should start seeing these things. CAN'T WAIT!

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
