Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

April 3, 2007

Water Temp –65

Water is stained

This is starting off as the best season ever for hybrid bass fishing. I knew it was going to be great when, on an afternoon trip a few weeks ago, we boated 5 fish that all weighed over 9 pounds. That’s huge!

Honestly I can’t remember when we started the year off like that. The last 2 years we were all getting a little worried about the fish. With the DNR phasing out Hybrid Bass at Oconee over the next 3 years, and introducing striped bass, we were all wondering if they were missing it. I guess it still remains to be seen, but right now the stripers are doing well with the hybes.

All of the fish are at the dam right now and will continue to be around there for the next couple of weeks. I think the minnow bite is over now, as I have seen our boats catch many more fish than guys who are fishing with shiners. Just observing other boats it seems like shad are doing better by probably 5 to 1.

The pattern is going to change throughout the day. If you get there early in the am and a pumpback is going on, use downlines. If the pumpback stop and generation starts, go to flat lines. Being able to change quickly has been the key to catch these things with regularity.

Get ready and go or give me a call and wel will handle all of it for you. It is going to be a lot of fun over the next few months.

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
