Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

January 9, 2008

The lake is at full pool! No kidding, it happened just about overnight and we are glad that things are getting back to normal. We didn’t get hurt too bad even when it was down, and anglers caught a lot of fish, but it is nice to know that you can put your boat in just about anywhere on the lake.

As far as the fishing goes, it is turning out really good. The gulls are back in town and at the middle of the Lake you can find them waiting for the fish to push the bait up to the top. Great Waters boathouse seems to be a great place for them to hang at and last year this time there were a lot of hybrids in that area. I have a feeling they will be showing up just any day now and when they do, it is going to be wild.

Live shad, bass minnows and Super Spooks are the arsenal that you must have on your boat, along with flat lines and down lines. These fish may change right in the middle of the bite and start blowing up on top of the water. Have your Spooks ready to cast at the school and make sure you don’t get right in the middle of the school because it will make them go down.

There is also a school of hybes that have been hanging out around the I-20 Bridge that have been showing up in the afternoon. It is kind of hit and miss with these fish, but if you find them, it is a lot of fun.

Crappie anglers have started showing up in the wintertime haunts that always produce many fish. Even though I haven’t hear of any big catches, I would start looking around The Smokehouse, Wayne’s Point and up the Apalachee River. Very soon they will be a lot of fish in that area and many anglers will follow.

If you are interested in being on our mailing list to received updated reports please just email me requesting to do so. Also in a few weeks we will be offering a brand new subscription service for up to the minute reports and many other tools for fishing Lake Oconee.

Thanks and tight lines!
