winter monsters have returned!

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

February 9, 2009

The monster crappie of the winter have returned! When the water hits 53 degrees in special areas on Oconee, the huge crappie began to show up and it becomes hallowed time. Guys take off from work, guides contact all their clients and we prepare for something that only happens once a year!

Today, the water went up to 53 and before the day was over we had 18 really big fish in the livewell. I have to agree with the sentiments of another angler that I spoke with today. He said, "I would rather catch ten of these two pounders than I would 100 dinks!" I have to agree because there is nothing like seeing a 2 plus pound crappie on the end of your line. As a matter of fact, many anglers have never seen it.

I am sure there will be other cold days coming that might mess them up, but today was the first day that we caught the large ones, which means you have not waited too late to get out here and give em a whirl!

I will chase these things until the last moon in March, and then it will all be over for another year and we will turn our attention to the larger, meaner striped bass.

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
