Woes of Oconee about over!

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

June 2, 2009

I realize that it has been some time since I posted a report, but we have been in dire straits here on Oconee. First of all the shad run this year has been at an all time high! "Thick as Fleas" doesn't do it justice, as the shad have come up on the banks to spawn every morning, and the fish have gorged on them, only to eat again the next morning. Now we have had some pretty good catches through out the run, but you have to get up really early and it only last for a couple of hours.

Second problem, have you heard about our algae bloom? I'm talking Green Acres! From Sugar Creek to Wallace Dam the water is a beautiful blue/green. Looks like the Bahamas until you put a bait in it and it disappears about 3 inches down. So not alot of encouraging news.....until now.

The shad spawn is over, and the fish are returning to their early summer haunts. The other afternoon we boated 25 fish in 2 1/2 hours, casting at them. It was so much fun, I almost wept! So, if you are looking to get back on them, just head toward the dam and the lower part of the lake and began looking on the humps. Hopefully they will get really hungry over the next couple of months and we will forget about the other stuff.

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
