Key Largo Backcountry Fishing Report 5/7/12

Lots of wind in the past week so most trips did the backcountry. Pick and chose your spots and there was good fishing despite the breezy conditions. Sea Trout

As for the snook fishing most fish have been in the creeks and pot holes on the flats, also in decent numbers. A lot of smaller fish showing up witch is good to see( a major cold front in 2010 killed many snook in Florida Bay). This shows they are coming back and this year is already better then 2011.

Most of the fish are in the 18 to26 inches range although we have hit some in the 8 lb class this year.Snook are one of my favorite fish to catch, small or big we are happy to see them making a come back. At this time snook in the backcountry off the Florida Keys and gulf of Mexico it is catch and release only through August 31, 2012.Tarpon are about in many fishing locations in the backcountry

from close to home (Key Largo) to Flamingo and farther west. Most fish in the backcountry are from 5 to 30 lbs

but are a lot of fun on 10 lb spin in the shallow water. Bigger fish are running on the Atlantic side and can be targeted in the backcountry as well. From hardcore anglers to first time novice backcountry fishing provides good action and is a great trip for all skill levels.
