Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Loaded Weedlines!
Nice to catch Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) in the winter months as they are normally considered a spring and summer time fish, but yesterday was just like a summer day! A beautiful large weed line wandered in from offshore of Marathon and Sombrero light and was located in about 450ft. of water in the morning and by afternoon had moved in to about 250ft. Good numbers of Dolphin were under almost every large weed patch (and there were many!). Most of the fish were school sized in the 3-10lb class but there were a few fish in the 20lb. class also reported from boats up and down the line that were working the weed line. Lets hope this trend continues and we have great Dolphin fishing all winter long!
Bayside Mangroves
Mangrove Snapper fishing has been excellent lately on the Florida Bay side of the Keys. We ventured out there today after our young anglers got a bit queezy on the ocean side and managed to catch our limit of nice sized Mangroves up to 5lb. We also caught and released many undersized red and black Grouper and some large Yellow Jacks. The action is usually non stop in the Bay this time of year as long as the weather holds and the water temp doesn't drop too drastically during cold fronts. The Snapper have also been biting well at the 7 mile bridge and on the shallow patch reefs on the ocean side of Marathon and the middle Keys. Best baits to hang the big Mangs are cut fresh Ballyhoo, live pinfish, pilchards and shrimp. Use 3-4ft of 15-20lb. fluorocarbon leader and a smallish hook. I use a #2 mustad 92677.
