Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

October 31, 2012 report.
October, 2012 has been a busy month for us at Fish On. Busy finding the fish and catching the fish. The Redfish bite has been good, although we have had to find out what they wanted to bite on a daily basis. Sometimes they like a gold bladed spinner bait, sometimes a rattle trap type bait, or a popping cork with a soft plastic under it. Sometimes, when they are deeper, a lead head with a soft plastic tight lined has the best results. I have had some clients fishing with me lately that fish in different parts of the country, they fish different types of fish using different types of methods, so they caught on quick. Mostly, all I had to do was to put the boat where the fish are, and they put the fish in the boat. The best action has been fishing in the main channels of the Mississippi River for slot Redfish with a big Bull Redfish surprising us here and there. We have also caught some nice Tripletail, although the bite for Tripletail has not been as good as last year. Also, the Speckled Trout have showed up in some outer bay areas, so that has made some folks happy, although most everyone that fish with me want to fight the Redfish. This cooler weather the last few days should put the Specks in the main river channels. They should really turn on. I will find out tomorrow when I start fishing again. I needed a few days off for rest and to restock on tackle. I would think the fishing should be very good into the new year. The only thing that might stand in the way of good fishing might be heavy winds when a front passes through, but sometimes we catch a lot of fish then as well. My wife, Leila , has been preparing some great food at the lodge. No one has lost any weight while they have been down.
I have had a lot of folks from the northeast come fishing with me this year, and I hope Hurricane Sandy has not turned their lives upside down. They have definitely been affected by this storm-no doubt. I hope they recover quickly. Down here, we know about disasters. From hurricanes to Gulf oil spills, there is always something that comes up to disrupt a normal routine of just living in this world.
I am starting to get bookings for next year starting in February through Spring. The Redfish fishing is good here during these cold times, so if you want to get out of the house and have some productive fishing consider coming down and getting in on it. Give me a call if you would like to talk about a trip. Thanks, Capt. Shawn
