Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report
April 27, 2014 Report.
The last couple of weeks the big Redfish fishing has been better than the slot Redfish fishing here around the passes of the Mississippi River. Just seems like the big fish have been more reliable as far as a bite, but we have boxed some nice slot fish when we move around and keep after it. Eventually, we run across where the eaters are at. The bigger, twenty to thirty pound fish, have been more active when Mullet have been in the area. They have been hitting on big soft plastic lures. We have been fishing murky water due to the higher water levels in the Mississippi River and the wind, so a popping cork with a lure under it tends to be a good technique to hook some fish. Corks make a vibration in the water that attracts fish. Topwater lures that make a noisy swim works good as well. Topwaters are not for everyone for sure, but an experienced angler can have a great time catching Reds on top plugs.
Muddy water is what we have down here in Venice Louisiana, because of the higher level of water this time of year. It's expected. As always, the Spring flood comes from up North, and the Mississippi takes in most of the snow melt and rain from the mid United States. The fish actually like the murky water and the nutrients the fresh water brings to the Gulf of Mexico. We catch fish in murky water. Bring on the high water and let the winds lay. Make the fog go away. The fishing is just going to get better when hurricane season comes, because the weather will be more stable, unless there is a hurricane…
