New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
July 21, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

It has been awhile since I updated this site, but the photos below will tell the story.

The first half of this report will be different as Shelley and I just returned from a short, but awesome vacation in southeast Alaska. My good friend Randy Lantiegne has been after us to come and visit, so we took him up on the offer. His wife Carrie and their two boys Tyler & Jessie were full of knowledge and acted as out tour guides on day one. We explored the town of Petersburg and the Mitkof Highway(all 35 miles of it).

We stopped at numerous small creeks along the way and I was shocked to see that Alaska still allows snagging of Chinook and Coho salmon during certain times. The local kids were having a blast and it looked like the Pineville bridge hole, circa 1989 or so. What a trip that was to see.

I have always applauded Alaska Fish & Game for their strict regs and fines imposed on law breakers, but this was terrible to see. I am told that they only allow it on waterways with hatcheries on them or streams that are only run by hatchery raised fish. I plan on learning more about this when I get a chance.

The rest of the week was filled with seeing seals, sea lions, eagles, fish, long-lining, tendering salmon,

glaciers, taking pictures, drinking bourbon, smoking cigars and all that good stuff. Guess this is sounding more like a blog than a fishing report.

If anyone wants more info on this area of Alaska, just give me a shot.

OK on to Lake Ontario fishing. I will back on the water from Monday until mid November when deer season will cut into my work schedule, I hope. I have some days left but they are few and far between. Call or e-mail me and I will let you know what is available

From Fair Haven to Henderson boaters are hooking up with good numbers of heavy feeding Chinook salmon !

I just heard of one topping the scales at over 32 pounds.

I hear a lot of reports regarding lost fish. Remember, these fish are mean and naughty and are fighting for their lives. They will to beat you bad at times. Getting half of what you hook is doing very well. Many of the adult fish are running between 18 and 25 pounds with a good number of real hogs, pushing 30! Keep the knots fresh and hooks sharp. Run heavy line and check your drags.

You should Troll 2.2 to 2.5 and run the pro-chip and spin dr flashers in white and green with a wide variety of flies.

Anglers are continuing to do very well on Oneida Lake. The deep and shallow water are both producing walleye. The application doesn’t seem to matter as trolling, jigging and drifting are all working. Look for smallmouth bass in 6-10 ft. of water using crayfish and silver shiners. Shackelton Shoals, Dutchman’s Bar and Lewis Point have been especially active.

Summer will be winding down soon and if you haven't taken your kids fishing you should. Make some time for them they will remember it forever.
