Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report
When I started guiding what I really wanted was to take people fly fishing. I do get a good number of fly fishermen but not near as many as I would like. I have watched other fly fishing guides come and go and have notice a certain pattern with most of them. Many start out thinking they will be able to take you into the bug infested, heated, sunny shallows and you will catch infinite numbers of redfish...lol...that doesn't happen. Most have followed me out to the big part of the bay and now fish for Spanish, ladyfish and other easier to catch species. I remember the days of tarpon fishing at Crooked Island when we would never see another guide and very seldom anyone else fishing.
One thing I like to do out: of the ordinary species. I chummed up 15 pound snapper this spring for Greg Ursdan which were a hoot to hook even though they were to big to turn and land and just recently proved to Daniel that catching kings on the fly was something which could be done. Fly fishing, and understanding fly fishing, is something to which I excel. If you want catch big numbers of big Spanish and ladyfish or you want something more exotic like a jack crevelle, snapper, amberjack, king, bonito or the occasional mahi mahi, I'm your guide.
I tie the flies you will use and know the tricks to get kings and others to eat a fly.
September and October are by far the best months to fly fish around Panama City although you wouldn't know that if you were continually chasing reds, while doused in bug spray, in the backwater occasionally seeing a fish and even less than occasionally hooking one.
Panama City Fishing Forecast:
Fall is here and it's time to get serious. Grouper offshore, trout and reds in the bay and fly fishing is what I will be doing.
Target Species:
Everything
